Education Assistants & General School Assistants

Fixed term General School Assistant (GSA)Â positions. The purpose of the job is to provide support to the school, teachers and learners by supporting learners with their sport, arts and cultural developmental needs and promoting a safe and secure school environment (maintain school infrastructure, gardens and surroundings).
DUTIES OF THE JOB:
There are 2 different GSA roles:
- Sport and Enrichment Assistants (SEA)
- The applicant does NOT require a Matric certificate. However, they should have an expressed or demonstrated passion for sports, arts, and culture.Â
- Handymen or women
- The applicant does NOT require a Matric certificate. However, they should be in possession of any trade certificate that will serve as an added advantage;
- Knowledge of any infrastructure maintenance jobs;
- The applicant should have an interest in infrastructure related jobs
Role requirement
- Youth at age 18 – 34 years (18 or above when applying, max 34)
- Youth residing within 5 km from the school or within 30 km from a farm/rural school
- One opportunity per household
- Meet requirements per category and sub-category applied for
- Youth, NOT in Education, NOT in Employment, NOT in Training (NEET)
- Youth NOT studying distance, online, part-time, full-time
- Youth NOT receiving government grants for self (e.g., NSFAS, Funza Lushaka, SASSA grants such as SRD 350) – receiving SASSA grant for someone else e.g., child grants collectors ARE ALLOWED to apply and those receiving disability grants ARE ALLOWED to apply;
- Youth NOT receiving any other form of STIPEND, WAGE or SALARY
- Youth NOT in a learnership
- Youth not in another programme of the Department of Education (e.g. Learner Support Agents, Care and Support Agents, Food Handler, Bus Controllers, Screeners, etc.)
- Youth WITHOUT criminal record/s (this must be proved by submitting a SAPS Police clearance report – see below)
- Youth that did not participate in Phase I, II or III
- Youth that was not unfairly advantaged above others due to their relations to staff members (SMT or SGB)
- Youth living with disability must provide a medical certificate confirming the nature of their disability
- Youth that have a valid South African Identity Book/Card or valid Passport
- Youth that do not appear on the National Register for Sexual Offenders (NRSO)
By virtue of the application, applicants consent to the Department of Basic Education submitting their details for screening against Part B of the National Child Protection Register as per the Children’s Act 38 of 2005.
DOCUMENTS THAT WILL BE REQUIRED AT THE INTERVIEW:
- Certified copy of identity document /passport
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Testimonial (e.g., from former school, local chief, church leader, previous employer)
- Qualifications (where specified – e.g., Matric /Grade 12)
There will be additional vetting required at appointment stage.
You will also sign an ACCEPTANCE and DECLARATION FORM if you are successfully appointed at the school.
In the DECLARATION you will confirm for e.g., that you are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) & also not receiving any other form of salary/wages, confirm that you do not have a criminal record and was not appointed in Phase I, II or III and do NOT appear on the National Register for Sexual Offenders etc.

- You must live within 5km from this school (or within 30 km if this is a farm/rural school)

BENEFITS
The stipend amount will be R4 081.44 per month. 1% UIF contribution will be deducted from the stipend amount.
DURATION OF THE CONTRACT:
Varied – Between 5-8 months (approximately 1 February 2023 – 30 September 2023)
